Henrique Luis Costa - Dança pra Galera

24th October 2005: Tuesday Morning : Room One: Sustainable Tourism and Infancy.

The speeches that particularly grabbed my attention were those of Ricardo Piquet, Angel Santos, Jimena Page, and Joel Zitto (on behalf of Arina Diotallevi).

Speaker: Jimena Page (Action for Brazil’s Children Trust)

She thinks that abuse against young people in Rio and Brazil should be reduced. A code of ethics: companies must respect them as people and as clients etc. etc.

She also said that tourism interacts with communities, giving opportunities to youngsters without any abuse occurring. Jimena made a donation to street kids and she organized projects to help the streets. After ten years they won a UNICEF prize as they helped more than 3,000 children in just one year. She also mentioned the AA KIDS project based in Sao Paolo as an example. In the United States, there are more than one hundred thousand NGO’s, 30 to 50 of which are non-profit. Fernando Meirelles is one of the patrons of the Nós do Cinema project in Rio, and in Brazil Varig is a key supporter.

She talked about the bad distribution of income in Brazil and especially Rio, and the fear some people have of coming to Rio. Jimmies House is a project based in Santa Teresa and represents how an organisation works to help a community. In order for something to be sustainable it must not use sexual abuse in any way as it is unacceptable.

26th October 2005: Wednesday Morning.
  Speaker: Claudia Costin.

She talked about school bursary projects to make suitable education more accessible. With regard to the sexual exploitation of minors we should stop this happening.

Speaker: Paolo Viero (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

He talked about looking at kids and adolescents as people, whilst being sure not to force young people to grow up too quickly, as this is the worst thing that can happen. The trafficking and abuse of young people, underage pregnancy and the transmission of STD’s such as AIDS was also talked about. Italy is committed to the prevention of sexual exploitation of minors. On the internet there is an article that says that kids under the age of six cannot travel due to the possibility of child abuse. Nowadays, universities (amongst other entities) work together to draw attention to the trafficking and abuse of minors who are forced to do things against their will.

  Speaker: Clara Jommarim

She talked about the battle in the tourism industry against sexual exploitation, with regard to Central America.
In San Rose (Costa Rica) there was a meeting about the sexual exploitation of minors. It offered training to the public about the issue and was to express that the public is against sexual abuse. Such initiatives should be used in relation to the social exploitation of children and young people.

Speaker: Ana Luiza Dezolt (Inter-American Development Bank)

She talked about a project founded in 1959 that is a regional financial institution. The project has representation in 47 countries (26 of which are mutual, 21 not so). There are currently 4 strategies in implementation: state modernization, industry modernization, reducing Brazil’s problems, and combating social inequalities. Also important are considerations about the environment and sexual abuse against minors, and kids should be cared for and looked after. The problem is year-round and so must be continually addressed. Initially it is necessary to allow affected children and their families to have access to psychiatrists to help them, so that in the long run the problem can be avoided altogether.
