Jonathan Nunes de Souza and Hugo Leonardo dos Santos - Baiana Hill Community Tour.

Justification and Objectives.

Throughout the world tourism is one of the main sources of income for countries, and it therefore holds an important position in the world economy. This is the case in Rio, as tourism is responsible for a significant part of our GDP.

When tourists come here, what are they looking for? Why do they go there? Why do they not look for other things?

These questions have obvious answers, and you do not have to be a genius to work out that where we live (i.e. the communities) doesn’t hold much of an attraction for them to come. However looking at it, I have come up with a couple of plans to bring tourists to my community. I thought ‘why don’t we take the initiative so that sustainable tourism can benefit our communities?’. In this project I am going to try to unite my community to benefit all of us who live there.

Do you not think that a tourist, coming to our community, eating our food, buying our arts and crafts, and getting to know our culture, will help our community? This is what I am proposing to you: the union of everyone who lives in the communities with the community traders for our own good! Such a union would benefit everyone from the owner of a local corner shop to the big local business men.

I do not propose that we ask for government hand-outs, but instead the co-operation of everyone in the community. The solution is not to wait for council assistance but to help one another in the community. We should make it so that our community interacts with the proposed project. I do not want to do Favela Tours, but rather Community Tourism.

With Community Tourism, the tourist does not only come to take a photo of the slum, but also to get to know the area, talk to people, and to participate in and benefit community life, be it by buying a souvenir or eating in a local restaurant.

We do not have so many natural attractions there, but we do have cultural attractions as well as the little-encountered attraction of hospitality and solidarity.

But for this to work, we need one more thing…our UNITY!!!

  The Project.

We aim to generate income to create a sustainable cycle for our community, and the profit that we make can be invested in our community and its needs.
