Current Problems with Tourism and the Communities

Generally speaking tourism is a good thing. The problem is that mass tourism dominates in Rio de Janeiro, and so the income from tourism does not go where it is really needed.
The community slums of Rio have loads of problems, such as the lack of education which causes the majority of social problems. Therefore, the two points above can be joined so that tourism helps the communities in a sustainable way.

Plan so that Tourism Helps the Communities.

1. Infrastructure of Tourism.
Idea: invest in Community Tourism. This form of tourism should be carried out in a good, sustainable way. It should involve people from the communities and use local products and services.
Why? : This would help that communities as it would provide an increase in income there that could be used for social and infra-structural development.
Example: Promote sustainable tourism whilst helping the communities.

  2. Collaboration.
Idea: better interaction between the government, communities and NGO’s.
Why? : So that everyone is working together to achieve the same goal. It is very important that the NGO’s have total support of the government to be able to work in the communities.
Example: International Volunteers can being new information, cultures, and skills to the communities, but only with the support of NGO’s and hence the government.

3. Investment.
Idea: The government must invest in the communities and in the organisations that work there.
Why? : So that each community can develop in its own specific way. If there exists an investment in the people who live in the communities then it is possible for them to generate income through tourism.
Example: Train people from the needy communities to be tour guides.

How will this help Brazil ?

There would be a decrease in problems like education, health care etc., as the income from tourism could be used to give more opportunities to people, and especially young people, from the communities.
There would be an increase in the infrastructure in the needy communities as a result of the direct and indirect income from tourism.

It would help communities whilst also maintaining the massive, lucrative tourism industry in Brazil.

And the truth is that this sort of idea would work, the problem is that it will be difficult to introduce such a project into a country that nowadays has many political problems. Nevertheless, at the form the speech given by Jennifer Seif showed how any good idea can work to improve tourism in a country with many problems, such as South Africa.
